United States Health Care: Only 38 Countries Behind

A very large indicator of any developed countries’ success is heavily weighted by their value of medical treatment. With this in mind, it’s important to analyze how the United States measures up to its competitors around the world because not only does it provide valuable information should you yourself need medical treatment, but it sheds some light onto how the country is fairing as a whole. In order to measure the performance of a country in the sector of their health care, there are numerous statistics that are compared. But let us take a look at the situation as a whole. The framework of any health care system begins by looking at how much contribution goes into improving the overall medical care and public health conditions. Some of these objectives include, diminishing health disparities, protecting the privacy and dignity of patients, helping patients avoid poverty from medical expenses, etc. Looking at the United States by means of medical spending, we rank number 1 in the world. This means that out of any other country in the world, the US spends the most on its medical care system. Ironically though, this does not mean a superior treatment for all patients. In the full spectrum, the United States is ranked 39 in the world for infant mortality, 42nd for adult mortality, and 36th for life expectancy. This shows that the US spends the most, but receives the least for its money. What’s more alarming then the lack luster position the U.S holds for health care quality, is that the U.S is actually declining, not improving each year. For example, since 1974, Australia has decreased its rate of death among boys and men ages 16-60 years old. Since the last study performed in 2006, Australia as a death rate that is some 40% lower than that of the USA. The list of studies goes on, highlighting the performance of the United States. The rate of improvement that the United States is showing compared to other countries is alarmingly slow over time.International comparisons are not necessary to clearly paint the dim picture of US health care though. While there are indeed many international studies comparing the quality of health care treatment among various countries, there are also many studies performed within the country. Many of these evaluations highlight the huge disparities found in the health care system among regions, ethnicity, and social class. The amount of preventable death found in the US among the poor compared to the wealthy is alarming. While most of the United States struggles to find medical insurance at an affordable rate, the wealthy do have better coverage but at incredible premiums that only they can afford. With the United States ranking nowhere near the top of the list for health care, it is obvious that reform is necessary to change the current trend. Ironically though, the medical field in the US is still one of the biggest employers. Hopefully in the near future, the US can reverse its current trend, and make more strides in the health care field. By making everyone aware of the current health care situation, the chance of a reform may be closer in our future.

Improving Senior Health Care

On May 11, 2009, Colorado Senator Michael Bennett introduced a new health care bill aimed to improve patient care and save money on health care costs. This new bill, the Medicare Transitions Act of 2009, is designed to improve patient care by ensuring that Medicare patients receive timely and effective follow-up care after they check-out of the hospital. The Medicare Transitions Act of 2009 bill aims to provide a nationwide network of local transitional care coaches that would help Medicare patients recover and self-manage their condition. Personal follow-up care would be offered in order to ensure that elderly patients were effectively self-managing their condition and properly administering medications. The bill would reduce costs by dramatically lowering patient readmission rates. Too many seniors are being readmitted into hospitals everyday even though it could have been prevented. For every five Medicare patients who are released from the hospital, one is readmitted within 1 month. This statistic can be prevented with proper follow-up treatment. Personal follow-up care would assess each patient’s condition and provide necessary treatment or further instructions for self-care.The cost of Medicare and Medicaid are two of the biggest deficits facing the nation today. Cutting costs on Medicare and Medicaid and improving senior care are exceedingly important in times of economic recession. Health care reform is essential to protect our elderly and secure our future.President Obama recently announced the introduced of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), a stimulus package designed to make health care affordable to all Americans. The ARRA allows $2 billion to be invested into community care centers, increase the quality of care provided to our elderly, and jumpstart our economy, among other things. These health centers will provide quality care for those who are in need, even for people who don’t have insurance.Unfortunately, many seniors cannot afford quality health care, and because of that our nation is suffering. Taking care of the elderly by offering quality, affordable health care coverage can positively impact society in many ways. Not only can it help promote longevity, but it can also help lower America’s large deficit.
